With the unexpected launch, West Virginia has become the fourth US state with legal online casino gambling thanks to DraftKings to serve its first operator. The other three states are New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
As the first operator that went live with West Virginia online casino, DraftKings announced its app is now available for both Android and iOS devices in the state. The operators issued the news through a brief press release issued Wednesday.
Another imminent market is Michigan, where DraftKings has planned to bring online casinos into life with a tribal partnership by the end of this year or early in 2021.
Welcome DraftKings Casino to West Virginia
Though DraftKings uses the same online casino app for all three states, the offerings in West Virginia would be simplistic.
DraftKings Casino West Virginia consists of some individual table games, including a few improvised by DK itself. Available bet amounts seem to range from the minimum $1 to a maximum of $5000.
No slots have been offered, however, as those games usually take longer for regulators to approve. Also, there’s no live-dealer option. So, for now, those games won’t be available to residents in West Virginia.
DraftKings operates in West Virginia under the license of Hollywood Casino, one of the initial partnerships established following the annulment of PASPA in 2018.
WV, early fashion-follower
West Virginia has been consistently capitalizing on the fashion-following with its sports betting mania. In 2019, the lottery organized this drive to legalize both online casinos and online poker sites, guiding the issue through the legislature after a few years of lethargic consideration.
In March 2019, the WV Lottery Interactive Wagering Act became law.
Things have been moving faster since, including the drafting of emergency rules enough to keep the industry up and running. Though regulators didn’t offer much insight during the licensing process, they seemed ready to go right on time.
The framework for West Virginia online casinos is the same as that for sports betting, with the five brick-and-mortar casinos serving as the primary licensees. Each casino may only launch online casino brand apiece, suggesting Hollywood owner Penn National Gaming may not use its new Barstool brand for non-sports online gambling in WV.
So far, Flutter is the only other company with a known point of entry for its WV online casino through the FanDuel Casino brand.
